Move or Improve?

You should evaluate your commercial properties annually or after a significant change in your business. Sometimes you may choose to renovate to get the space you want while staying put. These are critical decisions, so, consider the following points:

  • Itemize what you like and dislike about your present space. Would renovating fix what you dislike? Would it be more efficient to move into a new space with everything you want already in place or with minimal improvements?

  • Ask yourself if you are comfortable in your current location. Have you developed bonds and does your business have strong ties to the market? Would a new location be more beneficial to your business?

  • Evaluate your current location for its proximity to your home, customers and employees. If you move will it be better?

  • Will the cost of renovating add directly to the value of your property or would it be more cost effective to put this extra new money into investment for a new space?

  • If you move into a new property, what are the costs of selling and moving?

The answers to these questions should greatly assist you in making the decision on whether to move or improve.
